โ In 2018, the Royal Malaysia Police had to deal with 10,742 cybercrime cases with an estimated loss amounting to almost RM400 million, while in 2019, the number has increased to 11,875 cases with an estimated loss to almost RM500 million. And it was reported RM600 million lost throughout 2022.
โ Malaysia faces Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) attacks, with the latest incident involving email spear phishing. These attacks are a significant concern as many Malaysian organizations still rely on outdated and unsupported systems, making them vulnerable to further escalation since they cannot receive the latest security patches.
โ The number of content-related issues in Malaysian cyberspace is rising, and though the incidents are not numerous, their impact on the nation is significant. The internet's rapid and wide-reaching nature makes the effects of such issues potentially more harmful. Therefore, the authorities take internet-based content seriously, especially when it involves fake news, misinformation, seditious or slanderous material, and content with racial or religious overtones.
โ The main purpose of establishing NACSA was to coordinate and complement all cybersecurity efforts, ensuring comprehensive attention to all aspects of cybersecurity. NACSA focuses on cyber security policy, governance, and coordination, while also administering other areas of concern through specialized agencies as mandated..
โ NACSA plays a central role in the Cyber Security Ecosystem by serving as the focal point for all cybersecurity matters. It extends its scope vertically to encompass other relevant national initiatives, including Digital Infrastructure, Digital Trade, National Security, Digital Malaysia, and Digital Government.
โ NACSA is responsible for streamlining all cyber security planning, development, and implementation, ensuring the successful execution of the strategy. This involves outlining the roles and responsibilities of agencies involved in managing national cyber security. To achieve this, a new National Security Council's Directive will be legislated to clarify enhanced national cyber security governance arrangements, restructure committees responsible for cyber security, and define the exact roles and responsibilities of relevant agencies.
